The best supplements to increase your performance in the gym

You hear it everyday in the gym, "C'mon just one more rep, you can do it!"

Some days you feel like you're a super hero, other days you feel flat as a pancake. Getting that extra rep or lifting that little bit extra are actually more important than most gym rats realise. It's called progressive overload and is critical to muscle hypertrophy also known more commonly as "gains". The key is to train with intensity and focus in the gym each and every workout to achieve progressive overload.

But how can you consistently raise the bar in your performance if your diet, sleep and workout routine are already on point? Well, you can give yourself further advantage with these three supplements.

1. Caffeine is a useful pre-workout stimulant that can increase muscle endurance and strength. [1][2][3][4][5] 

Caffeine has been reliably shown to increase anaerobic running capacity, increase power output, increase aerobic exercise capacity, reduce the rate of perceived exertion, increase reaction time, decrease fatigue, and increase oxygen uptake. 

People typically take dosages of 50-400 mg of caffeine everday, as part of their caffeine ritual. The science shows that clinically effective dosages vary between 3 and 6 mg per kg of bodyweight. [6] 

2. Beta-alanine

Commonly found in pre-workout supplements, beta-alanine can help increase the muscular stores of carnosine, which regulates acidity levels in your muscles.

When a muscle contracts repeatedly, it becomes more and more acidic. This, in turn, impairs its ability to continue contracting, until eventually it can no longer contract at all.

Carnosine helps prevent this by reducing muscle acidity, thereby increasing the amount of work your muscles can do before acidic fatigue.

Beta-alanine’s major benefits lie in augmenting muscle growth and improving physical endurance and is a fantastic supplement to enhance muscular endurance in the 60 to 240 second range.

That's not to say it doesn't improve exercise lasting less than a minute or greater than three minutes in duration, it's just that the magnitude of improvement becomes small with relatively short or long bouts of exercise.

This is why many weightlifters take both beta-alanine and creatine, which notably improves performance in the sub-60-second realm and slightly improves performance in the 60-to-240-second realm.

However, while both beta-alanine and creatine are found in many pre-workout supplements, research shows creatine is best taken post-workout.

There’s also evidence that ingesting caffeine with creatine may interfere with its effects, yet both are found in many pre-workouts!

Our Story - Legion Supplements UK

I co-founded Shift Supplements to bring Legion Athletics supplements to Mike Matthew’s fans in the UK.

But a year ago I would never have dreamed of being involved in the fitness industry.

I was obese with a body fat percentage of over 30%, and while not necessarily living an unhealthy lifestyle I was just blindly unaware of the poor dietary choices I was making or even how to lose weight (which I’ve since learned is actually fat that I wanted to lose).

 

I joined a gym and started out like everybody else with a standard issue gym programme, slogging it out on the treadmill and doing light weight, high rep workouts mostly on machines.

But I noticed something different about the guys and girls pushing heavy weights. They were all lean and vascular not monster looking freaks that you see on the cover of bodybuilding magazines. I looked round the gym and all the people who were out of shape were the ones on the treadmills and doing light weights on machines.

So, I started doing my research and was totally overwhelmed by the huge amount of (mis)information out there. Everybody had the magic pill, miracle diet, fast weight loss solution, killer workout for instant muscle growth!

Only a small number of health and fitness gurus were telling the truth, but very few people listen as its human nature to do as little as possible for maximum gain so people believe the marketing hype that there’s some sort of short cut.

I stumbled across Mike Matthews site muscleforlife.com  where he gave free, honest advice and dispelled all the myths and blatant lies. The bottom line is there are no magic pills, miracle diets or killer workouts that make you look like a cover model in a month (or two or three).

You need to be dedicated to proper nutrition and training as a way of life to achieve real and sustained results. Oh, and the right supplements can help too.

So where am I on my life transforming journey? Well in the first four months of Mike’s Bigger, Leaner, Stronger programme I lost 25% of my bodyweight, plummeting from 88kg down to 66kg. A year later my body composition has completely changed, my body fat percentage is about 14% (could easily be 10% but I’m not religiously counting my calories), I’ve put on about 10kg of muscle and weigh in at 70kg. I’ve still got someway to go and with consistency I know I’ll achieve a body I never dreamt of having.    

 

You can do it too, I’ve helped others using the same principles from Mike’s Thinner, Leaner, Stronger programme for woman and BLS for men. That’s been the most amazing part of my journey – people both in and out the gym asking me what I do and if I can help them. Oh, and people I know but not seen in a while not physically recognising me - that’s how much I’ve changed!
